The piece was created as part of a new and ongoing series exploring lightning charms.

Holly was revered as a lightning charm in times gone by and the tree would be planted close to houses for protection. As the sap rises and falls inside the living wood, nature folklore also ebbs and flows with the times. This knowledge was formally passed on through ‘old wives tales’, however, these traditions are gradually being lost to the modern world as we find ourselves further disassociated from nature. This piece symbolises a sense of that loss, whilst marking the richness and beauty of these beliefs.

Go See this! Light Show | Southbank Centre

Light Show-Hayward Gallery

Light Show | Southbank Centre.

Went to see this show at the Hayward Gallery last week and would highly recommend! Definite highlights for me were Carlos Cruz-Diez (pics below), Doug Wheeler and of course the amazing James Turrell!
Cruz-Diez’s ‘Chromosaturation’ consists of 3 rooms each one lit by a different coloured light, red, blue, green.  As you pass from one room to the next the colours bleed into eachother.  However the most striking sensation is the actual physical presence of the light which is so saturated, to the point of being quite disorientating.  The colour hits you like a brick wall before completely engulfing you.  You feel completely swallowed up for a few seconds as your eyes acclimatise, lost to the colour; an incredible feeling!

Katie Paterson’s piece entitled ‘Light Bulb to Simulate Moonlight’ is something that i have read about and ths was the first time i got to view it in person. Paterson worked with a lighting engineer to produce a bulb which mimics the actual frequency of moonlight.  A beaufiful idea and poetically minimal; the actual opposite of a daylight bulb.
